Sports programs reinforce positive character traits in young children that they will develop until they reach adulthood, enabling them to become more production members of society. It is a proven fact and it is the reason that a lot of people across the country are against cutting athletics from school programs. When kids become part of a youth soccer team, they learn much more than just the sport. They also learn valuable life lessons that will mold their character for life.
One thing that you can’t get from a book is the ability to become mentally tough. The child learns from experience that they are going to have some days that are good and some days that are not so good. It just part of it. They learn that when they hit a rough patch to take it in stride and work hard for a solution! They learn to deal with the tough times and enjoy the good times.
Another great lesson they discover is that they are becoming much more physically fit. Instead of becoming a couch potato, drinking pop and eating chips while watching sports on TV, they get to experience the joy of the sport and also reap the benefits of stronger muscles and increased energy.
The social benefits are colossal. Today a lot of children become solitary and standoffish, essentially keeping to themselves a lot. By being a part of a soccer team they have to learn to interact better and learn what it means to be a small part of a very large wheel and that will serve them well as they move through school and on into the world of business. The word team does not contain the letter “I” and the sooner that lesson is learned the better.
All too often children learn that they can blame others for the mistakes that they make and they can get away with it a fair amount of time. Not a great lesson, but one that they learn none-the-less. However, through practical experience playing soccer children learn the truth about accountability. If someone passes the ball to them and they miss the pass, they will be held accountable for their mistake. Here is another invaluable lesson that is better to learn at a very young age. They also learn a huge part of accountability comes in the form of dependability. For your team to develop confidence that you passed the ball you will play your position well, you have developed a track record over time of proven dependability.
Lastly, looking at the big picture they can see that they are a part of something much larger than themselves. That will help them overcome self-centeredness that is common in children.
Children quickly learn that all the hard work that they put forth to improve is rewarded by success on the field. I can give a gigantic boost in self-esteem and self confidence just hearing the words, “Great Job” said by their coaches and team mates. To recognize player achievements such as MVP, Most Improved Player, etc. many coaches choose to give out personalized soccer awards. A child learns that developing their skills and hard work pays off. Coaches usually have a dinner at the end of the season. At this time awards may be given to player honoring their achievements. Children learn to appreciate the achievements of others as well as their own. Soccer gifts are given by many coaches at this time to every member of the team as a keepsake and also to insure that nobody feels left out.
Soccer is a wonderful sport that can teach many valuable lessons children in their formative years, ingraining a good moral foundation and a strong outlook of right and wrong
