So the pub pool table just what’s so special about them? No prizes for guessing where you find these tables, in Public Houses or pubs to you and me. Although not as large as their American counterparts, the same games and rules apply. The ball size for an English table is 2 inches versus 2 ¼ inches for the bigger American pool tables, so the pockets too are correspondingly smaller. Although not as big as the tables in the USA, you can still have a good game on them and they are now very popular.

Pub pool tables are also known as English Tables from whence they came, and they have now turned into a whole new branch of pool with its own rules and competitions. According to the newly formed English Pool Association the correct size for small pool tables is 7 feet and the ball size has to be 2 inches in diameter. Eight ball pool played on the smaller table has now grown to international proportions with players in Africa and the Far East. The spread of the game has attracted some big sponsors now. The guy who won last time got a nice cheque for a few grand from the sponsors Fosters thank you very much! Not too shabby eh!

The game most often played on these tables is 8 Ball, which is actually played with 15 balls and a white cue ball. To allow for the ball return mechanism to work, the cue ball on commercial tables is a bit smaller so it returns to the player if pocketed accidentally. When it comes to the balls used on the pool table they come in 2 flavours, the red and yellow ball set and the traditional solid colours and striped colours and both sets have a black number eight ball as well. With the red and yellow set, you get 7 red balls and 7 yellows and a black 8 ball and with the American style set you get 7 solid colours numbered 1 through 7 and 7 striped coloured balls numbered 8 through 15 and of course the black 8 ball. The object of the game is to pocket all the balls of one colour or number set (1-7 and 8-15) , and then the ‘eight ball’ to win the game.

The pool cues have subtle differences between the two codes, with English players preferring a tip of eight or nine millimetres.5 mm used on cues for the smaller table and 12 or 13 mm sized tips used on the larger tables with the larger balls. From little acorns etc, who would have thought that small pool tables could have created a whole new way of playing pool and spawned a new division of the game. Pub pool tables have now grown to create a whole new division of playing pool and has introduced a whole new generation to the game.
