Years ago when I was a small child I went with my father to a model railroad display and I saw the most astonishing thing I had ever seen a model trains world in miniature.
I stood for ages just looking in awe at the scene before me and I lost count of all the trains running this way and that along the tracks as they appeared and then disappeared again into a tunnel into a mountain.
Some of the trains were very long made up of dozens of coal trucks or freight cars but there were also passenger trains with just a few carriages filled with small people
and the trains would stop at the railway stations before moving on again.
There were mountain for the trains to run through and around with valleys and bridges over rivers with water tumbling over rocks it was like looking down on the world from a plane in the sky.
From the day I set eyes on that world of miniature trains I have had a dream of one day building my own small world on a model trains layout as mesmerizing for any small child to see so they would remember it in later years.
It is a bit daunting thinking of the work involved in planning the track to go around the hills and across rivers like the amazing display of moving trains and cars and the buildings of a world in miniature I remember.
We all have childhood dreams that we hope to achieve and I believe and I will be able to relive those dreams as I build my own trains layout and I expect to be working on this for a long time but it will be a pleasure.
I am not an artist so some of this work will be difficult to make it all look real but these days I have the time to devote to a project like this and I found some useful guides to plan model train layouts and when I retire I will have even more time to work on this project.
The impression the visit to the model railroad layout exhibition made on me as a child never went away even after all these years so I am sure I will enjoy building and improving a life like model train layout for the rest of my life.
