Wrestling fans, which presentation do you like better as far as the invisible camera?

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Do you like the Vince Russo invisible camera where the wrestlers could be planning a bank robbery backstage and somehow not notice the national tv cameras and lighting kits? Or where wrestling is presented like other sports with interview segments, and they really acknowledge the camera and don’t do or say things you won’t expect them to say if they saw it?

Could Ken Shamrock be the "gene Simmons" of Mma Marketing Part I

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

As you can probably imagine, the world of a Mixed Martial Arts fighter is sometimes short lived resulting from the potential career ending injuries, Win/Loss records, and most importantly fan recognition. Obviously, if you are hurt you can’t fight, if you are losing more than you win, then the fight isn’t worth watching, and if no one is watching how can the fans root for you, making your career as an ultimate cage fighter fleeting. I think Ken realized this early on and made sure he didn’t fall into any of those categories. Which is why as you will see in a moment that fighters today need to take a second look at the model Ken is putting together by self-promoting his brand to insure continuing sources of income when the fighting is done.

For those unfamiliar with Gene’s track record let’s examine his trek and then compare that to what I see Ken Shamrock building now. Gene Simmons is one of the founding members of the historic band Kiss. In 1974, they weren’t your typical rock band. Their niche was shock and roll, wearing kabuki style make up, black leather and pyrotechnics that launched them to be the must see show of all time. Gene has had the passion to drive this band to set records all over the world in album sales and arena sellouts. Like them or not, they got noticed early and continued to be a juggernaut in self promotion and marketing.

In the seventies, you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing a KISS t-shirt, KISS coffee mug, KISS key rings and the list goes on and on. Today you can even purchase a KISS Coffin. Once Gene established this additional income, he launched everything he could with the KISS name on it. This would not have been successful if he and the rest of the band had not been so passionate about building their brand first. This type of entrepreneurship became Gene’s reputation and thus went on to form other businesses now touting his own name as the “brand.”

Brands like Simmons’ records, Gene Simmons’ rock school, and the lately popular, Gene Simmons Family Jewels reality TV show. He had the foresight to understand the fickled part of fame and that it has it’s ups and downs and these other successes he developed has ensured him a continuing paycheck 35 years later. Ken Shamrock’s similarity in his rise to fame began as Gene Simmons’ did. Neither came from any kind of family wealth. Both began as paupers on the street. As read in his biography page on kenshamrock.com

…”When thirteen-year-old Kenneth Kilpatrick first came to Bob Shamrock’s group home in sunny Susanville, California, his future did not look bright. He had grown up fatherless in a poor neighborhood in Georgia, where he learned life’s lessons on the streets.”

”Bob had raised more than six hundred boys in his home, and his methods were both unique and effective. In response to the feuds that often arose with prideful boys sleeping under the same roof, he offered them an unorthodox method of resolution. If both parties were willing, he allowed them to throw on boxing gloves and duke it out in the backyard.”

With Bob Shamrock’s obvious encouragement Ken Shamrock went on a quest to hone his passion for the craft of fighting. My recollection of his first entry to the fight scene was at the first Ultimate Fighting Championships. This first illegal bare knuckle street fight televised on pay-per-view launched the beginning of a fanatical culture and today’s legitimate Mixed Martial Arts Sport. From this beginning, Ken showed us a different look at fighting, submission/wrestling style.

While most of the competitors that night were from different disciplines such as karate, kempo, and even boxing, Ken’s fighting style was more eloquent and precise. This is what made him initially stand out in the crowd of the other combatants. When asked in a recent interview on thegarv.com Ken didn’t attribute his fights that night or even the winner of that tournament, Royce Gracie for catapulting Ultimate Fighting to the success it gained.

”I think what really set the standard was exactly what you just said, was when Teila Tuli’s teeth came flying out into the front row. I think if you would have had a fight, very first fight, and it was Royce Gracie and Art Jimmerson, and they would have seen that first, people would have crapped all over the place. They would have just turned the TV off. Because that’s not what people were looking for. They were looking for exactly what happened, with the teeth flying. What happened first set the tone for MMA, what it is today. Whether or not Royce Gracie won was irrelevant, I believe. I think that because the first fight was so brutal and so real, that’s what set the stage for MMA.”

Ken was also at that point making a name for himself in Japan fighting for a group called Pancrase. Pancrase became the next phase for MMA’s rise to popularity via pay-per-view promotions featuring Ken in the Main Events.

Look for Part 2 of this article. Could Ken Shamrock be the “Gene Simmons” of MMA Marketing Part II.

New Yam Festival of Ogba Kingdom (onelga) Rivers State Nigerian

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Ogba is an ethnic group in rivers state Nigeria, with a population of about 480,000 people with a land mass of Approximately 2600 square meters, agriculturally rich with the best aqua cultures in Africa at Omoku and are naturally endowed with thousands of natural resources. The uniqueness of it all is their cultural heritage which include New Yam festival (Egwu Ogba), Masquerade display and Traditional Wrestling that showcase the culture of the Ogba people to the fullest.
Egwu Ogba festival (New Yam festival) is an annual celebration of the people of Ogba Kingdom, during this period, the people try very hard to give peace and love a chance devoid of any sort of political undertone. It is a period of giving and sharing with fellow family members and relations. They are, however, celebrated in accordance with the native calendar of the Ogba people which is in August. And it is considered the last month of their year. The Uniqueness of the Ogba New Yam festival (Egwu Ogba) is the harvesting of new yam to mark the celebration. The paramount ruler of the Kingdom known as Eze Ogba will formally announce the date in four market days in advance to declare open the celebration and he shall instruct all the 82 town and villages to prepare their self for the celebration.

On the last market day the celebration begins with the interpretation of the Ogba culture and norm to the younger generation. The eldest man of every community assembled in their various town halls to reinstate the need to pass the culture of the people to the younger generation born and yet to be born. After that he will start by telling the story of how Ogba people came in existence by narrating the order of birth in their communities and how the fore fathers live their lives compare to the life today. Prior to the conclusion of the story telling, the young adults are asked to start a masquerade (Owu) display in their respective communities all family urges their children to see the need while they should partake in the dance which serves as an entertainment period for the people. For no one is allow going for farming, because the King has earlier send message to all families to go and harvest enough food that can lasts for two weeks. After the expiration of the two weeks, there is a two days break and the Kind send the second announcement round again, it says there should be no farming for the purpose of the fest is to compel every one to have a rest from working.

And next is the traditional wrestling, Traditional wrestling is a popular activity in most region in Nigeria. It is seen not only as a competitive sport, but also as a way to exercise and a chance to entertain in the ceremonies of the village. In the past, it served three important roles in Ogba Kingdom: It prevented fighting; it also involved exercising - to make our body healthy and it kept them able to fight in a battle if needed. Nowadays, the younger Ogba generations wrestle as a competitive sport. They also take part for fun on special occasions, such as Ogba New Yam festival, on such occasions, the wrestlers walk from one place to another to find competitors. It would be incorrect to assume that this was not an activity for the fairer sex. Many women take part and have done so throughout the history of the sport. Sometimes, even beating the most experienced male fighters, during a special ceremony in Ogba kingdom, the young wrestler, with a strong body and a great love for this sport, begins by choosing his competitor. He does this by shouting: “Come and pay for the food” - what this means is that since we eat the food in the Festival day therefore we must entertain on this happy occasion to thank those who offered the food. After saying this he jumps and runs around topless through the crowd in the pagoda, showing off his techniques and his physique. A few minutes later another person will reply, “Here is the food payer” and then he does the same as the first man,They have found a competitor.

The competition attracts many villagers, who either stand or sit in a circle and cheer for the man they support. An old man, who is usually an old-hand wrestler, is an adjudicator for this game. Before competing they talk about the rules and what kind of competition it will be - just a friendly spar, showing their techniques or until death. The latter is not very common nowadays. During these bouts, passions run high for competitors and the audience alike. Sometimes the supporters get carried away and fight amongst themselves, wrestling first appeared when the Ogba Kingdom was being established.

The uniqueness of it all is their cultural heritage, which include New Yam festival (Egwu Ogba), Masquerade display and Traditional Wrestling that showcase the culture of the people to the fullest.

Egwu Ogba festival (New Yam festival) is an annual celebration of the people of Ogba Kingdom, during this period. Does the casual wrestling fan care more about Characters and good storylines then wresling itself?

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

People say they dont watch TNA because they have poor gimmicks and poor storylines. They don’t care that they bring better wrestling to the ring.
And i often see people talking about storylines after a ppv. They don’t really talk about what was the best wrestling match etc.
So do wrestling fans today care more about storylines and gimmicks then wrestling itself?

Do you?

Well let me put it this way.

Cena & hardy are extremely popular..

Wwe Diva Search Winners & Losers

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Since 2003, the WWE has held a unique talent search contest known as the WWE Diva Search. This competition involves some of the most beautiful and talented women around, vying for a spot on the WWE Divas roster. There’s usually one female crowned the winner each year, but this is never a true indicator of future success. In fact, several of the runner-ups and losers in the contest have gone on to more success than the winners. In this article, we’ll take a look at the winners and losers who’ve achieved success in the WWE brand of pro-wrestling and beyond.

The main purpose behind the diva search has been to find a new diva for the WWE Raw, Smackdown or ECW television shows who acts as an interviewer, wrestler and/or manager for other wrestlers. Past winners have included Ashley Massaro, Christy Hemme, Layla El and Eve Torres. Each of these women has achieved careers in WWE following their diva search victories. So far, Ashley may have achieved the most fame of these lovely women. She not only was a competitive wrestler in WWE for some time, but she also had cameo roles on TV shows, was on Survivor: China and appeared as one of several nude WWE divas in Playboy. Eve Torres is the most recent diva search winner and currently is a backstage interviewer on Smackdown. The lovely latina is training for her WWE wrestling career daily. Ashley and Christy are no longer with WWE, as both have moved on to other endeavors. Christy Hemme is currently on the TNA Wrestling Knockout roster, still bringing her beauty and skill to wrestling.

Although they’re technically considered “losers” of the diva search, they’re hardly losers by any means at all. Several divas have been eliminated early in the contest or were runner-ups and still went on to WWE Raw and Smackdown careers. Four great examples of this are Candice Michelle, Michelle McCool, Maryse Ouellet and Maria Kanellis. Candice, Maria and Michelle were all contestants in 2004’s Raw Diva Search, but Christy Hemme was its winner. Despite this, all three girls are still in WWE wrestling. Candice has held the WWE Women’s Championship while Michelle McCool is current WWE Divas Champion. Both Maria Kanellis and Candice Michelle have appeared as nude WWE divas in Playboy magazine.

Other women who’ve been hired by WWE despite losing the diva search include Joy Giovanni, Amy Weber, Taryn Terrell, Kristal Marshall and Maryse Ouellet. Maryse currently stars as one of Smackdown’s WWE Divas, while Taryn Terrell, also known as “Tiffany” is the assistant to ECW General Manager, Theodore Long. Another name or face you may recognize is Leyla Milani. She’s been featured in USA’s “members of the Raw nation” advertisement, and currently works as on the hit NBC show, “Deal or No Deal” as one of the girls with the briefcases. So the next time the diva search rolls around, don’t worry if your favorite contestant bows out early. She may still have a successful career in WWE wrestling or the entertainment industry.

How To Avoid Legal Trouble From Trademark Infringement When You Buy A Domain Name

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

So you have a hot idea for a website, or maybe you want to capitalize on a hot new product that has just been released. There are some things that you will want to know first before you get yourself in a lot of hot water.

Choosing a domain name isn’t really rocket science but it is very important. You want to choose something that is as short as possible, easy to pronounce and remember for marketing purposes, and if at all possible you want to get your main keywords in the domain name. All that aside, you also have to be careful that you don’t step on the toes of a person or company who may be inclined to sue you.

For example, judges have ruled against domain name squatters in every case where they registered a celebrity’s name. They will also rule against companies that infringe upon other companies. A good case in point would be the case a couple of years ago between the World Wrestling Federation and the World Wildlife Foundation. The World Wrestling Federation called itself the “WWF”, put up a website at wwf.com, and the World Wildlife Foundation filed a trademark infringement suit against them. The Wildlife Foundation won because they had been in existence for many years before the wrestling firm and therefore the World Wrestling Federation had to change its name to World Wrestling Entertainment. Obviously this cost them a great some of money to change their name that appeared on millions of marketing products all over the world as well as the expense they had put up on their website and online marketing.

Another more recent issue that is still ongoing is the battle between Apple and the V.O.I.P. product “iphone” from Cisco. Apple announced they would be bringing a product to market called the Apple iPhone to go along with their other products that start with an “I”. Cisco promptly filed for injunctive relief and as of this writing the issue is unresolved.

There are a few basic guidelines that will help keep you out of trouble when you are choosing a domain name so you don’t run into legal trouble from violating someone’s trademark. Let’s take a look at them.

First off you need to realize that a name that is used to identify a particular service or product is a recognized trademark. Trademarks that are deemed to be suggestive and memorable are granted protection by both state and federal law.

A confliction of trademarks occurs when one trademark is in conflict with another and the deployment of both is probably going to be confusing to customers or would be customers concerning the company’s products or services. As I illustrated above, when the legal issue is with a later user of a trademark, the law rules that the first commercial user of the trademark is the legal owner and is therefore given protection. The loser will be forced to cease using the trademark and may even be compelled to pay damages to the original owner, particularly if it is determined that they were malicious in their intent.

The smart thing to do is to consult a trademark lawyer and have them check out your idea for a domain name before you invest too much in developing and marketing it.

Free UFC Prediction Frank Mir vs Cheick Kongo

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

I will tell you one thing about this fight, Cheick Kongo  sucks at grappling. Yes he can strike but his grappling is so bad it is not even funny. About 6 months ago Kongo made a visit to Vancouver Canada and he stopped and rolled with some of my teammates at Dynamic MMA and some Marcus Soares BJJ fighters. Adam Ryan runs Dynamic MMA and he was putting on a show on Kongo. Yes Ryan has MMA experience and is a black belt in jujitsu under 7th degree BJJ black belt Marcus Soares but he was playing with Kongo on the ground and many guys ranging from blues, purple, brown belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu were also dominating Kongo on the ground. Cheick Kongo was basically being pimped on the ground. Kongo was only able to survive just on the fact that he was bigger and had freak strength.

Bet this UFC fight at BetUS

If Kongo was getting dominated by some guys that don’t ever fight no gi, than what chance does he have with Frank Mir? Frank Mir is a legitimate black belt that will come into this fight heavier at 245 pounds than Kongo (230) and one inch shorter. There is no way that Kongo will be able to keep this fight standing and no way will he be able to defend Mir’s submission attempts.

Mir received his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after only 5 years of training from Ricardo Pires who is a forth degree black belt under Professor Marcus Soares, from Carlson Gracie. Mir is a legitimate black belt with real skills while Kongo is barely a blue belt at best. Mir has the size and power to attack and submit Kongo in this fight.

It is not a matter if but when this fight hits the ground in this heavyweight fight. Just look at Kongo’s last MMA fight. He fought Cain Velasquez and in all 15 minutes of that fight he was on the ground for 12 of them. Velasquez was able to take him to the ground and basically control him and beat him down for 12 minutes. I would have personally scored each of those round 10 to 8 in favor of Velasquez. It was embarrassing how apparent his lack of skills were on the ground.

Now detractors of this article will say that Velasquez was a NCAA division 1 fighter and that it was his wrestling skills that were able to hold him down on the ground. Well first Mir has considerable wrestling skills where he went to Bonanza High School in Las Vegas where he had a record of 44–1. He started wrestling during his junior year and lost his first nine matches but won the state championship as a senior in 1998.

Bet this UFC 107 fight at BetCRIS

Yes Kongo has the advantage in the striking department but Mir has enough skills to bide his time before he will be able to take him down. Yes Kongo was the former Muay Thai World champion and can knock out Mir but Mir has fought top level strikers in the past. Mir fought Antoni Hardonk (who has a similar fighting style to Kongo) at UFC 74 and won via kimura in 1:17 of the first round. I predict a similar fate in the fight. Mir will take Kongo down and either attack the legs or the win this fight by kimura.

Bottom Line: If you think Kongo will win this fight you really don’t know mixed martial arts. The sports book odds makers opened the UFC betting lines with Mir as a -185 betting favorite. I would have opened up at -250 so this UFC sports bet is a steal on the money line. I would lay a lot of money on Mir to submit Kongo.

Kongo is no where near a top level fighter. He is the best example of a one dimensional fighter. He has great striking but no grappling whatsoever. He has used his size and strength in the past but Mir is a bigger fighter and will impose his skill on an unskilled fighter. This is the best UFC bet of the night. I would lay a huge amount of money on the money line and if there is a UFC prop bet I would bet on a submission victory in this fight.

What wrestling pay per views would you consider underrated or overlooked and why?

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Have you ever wondered why certain wrestling pay per views that are great, get overlooked, passed over, for other pay per views that aren’t quite as good?

Wrestlemania 22 it was actually a really good Wrestlemania RVD won the MIBT match, Kurt Angle vs Rey Mysterio vs Randy Orton was amazing and a very fast-paced exciting matchup.

Triple H vs John Cena was decent but the crowd was amazing in this match.

Edge vs Mick Foley hardcore match was freaking awesome, especially the ending.

Sure, Mania 22 had some bad matched, like Taker vs Mark Henry and the diva’s pillow fight, but overall I think it was good and very underrated.

Algae In Your Acquarium - 4 Tips To Eliminate It Completely

Friday, June 18th, 2010

One of the biggest downfalls when it comes to owning a fish tank is the algae buildup. Unfortunately, for fish owners, fresh and saltwater alike, this is a just a natural reaction in the tank and it needs to be cleaned. There are four different types of algae you could find yourself wrestling with: green, brown, red-brush and blue green.

Green algae are the normal type that most people have to deal with. It usually grows in bright aquariums. For anyone who has ever had to clean green algae knows this isn’t a fun experience when you are trying to scrape the sides of the tank. Hair algae are usually floating around in the tank and can easily be cleaned with a fish net. The hard green dot algae take a lot of scrubbing time.

Brown algae normally appear when an aquarium has just started. This means that phosphate and nitrate levels are out of whack. These need to be tested and adjusted. The owner might consider adding more light as brown algae thrive in dim lighting. Expect the brown algae to go away once the water conditions are controlled.

Red-brush is difficult to deal with, but not very common. They only thrive in high pH levels. And, blue-green algae, well, it’s not actually algae. It’s a form of bacteria and resembles a slimy film that covers everything. This needs to be removed and cleaned immediately because it will harm anything in the tank from the plants to the fish.

There are different ways to prevent algae or at least limit the amount of algae that grows in the tank. It can’t be all neutralized, but at least make the clean up process go a little easier.

1. Use less lighting. This might seem counterproductive because brown algae thrive in low lighting, but they also need specific water conditions to grow. Use dim lighting or turn the lights off after a certain interval, between seven and eight hours. This will prevent the algae from getting enough to light to photosynthesize.

2. Change the water every couple of weeks. This will inhibit algae growth. Also, vacuum the rocks and clean the gravel. You can also use distilled water when changing the water as a way to maintain algae growth. However, if you use distilled water, you have to do it every time the water is changed because you could harm the fish if you use different water every time.

3. Get algae eating fish. There are some fish that just love algae and will suck it right off the sides of tank like certain catfish. If you fill your tank with these fish, your algae cleaning days will come to a minimum.

4. Purchase a reliable algae glass cleaning magnet. This will make the process easier when have to clean and help reduce the algae produced between cleanings.

Algae are the least fun part of owning fish. However, it needs to be cleaned for the fish to thrive. Even if you do own algae eating fish, this shouldn’t be an excuse not to clean the tank. Check the sides of the tank and any tubes or pipes that lead into the tank for algae. It can grow in the strangest places.
