I am going to start scuba diving as a hobby and am looking to get some opinions on what type of scuba diving equipment to buy.

If you’re going to dive "as a hobby" then you’re probably not going to do high-end diving (Tek, photography, cave/wreck, etc.)
That means you don’t have to spend wagon loads of money on expensive gear.
As with anything, there are ‘discount’ grades of gear and opportunities to spend too much.

Get connected with a local dive shop that has a good reputation among local divers. That’s how you want to handle purchase and maintenance of critical life support - specifically your regulator. DO NOT EVER buy this kind of stuff from an online vendor.
Wet suits and gloves and accessories you can buy online once you know what size and what you like. I actually have a wetsuit that I bought used and have gotten good service from it.
Personally, I won’t buy a mask that I can’t try on first.
Fins will last a very long time if maintained and they’re not expensive to buy at the dive shop.

Don’t get in a hurry to buy gear. Try out several kinds as rented equipment first. You’ll especially want to see what kind of instruments you like before spending the bucks on gages or a computer.

If you really want a remote and almost unknown place for Caribbean scuba diving then you should go to Nevis. There are many scuba diving sites on the east side of Nevis. Scuba diving can be done inshore as well as offshore with some beautiful naturally formed coral reefs.

Scuba diving is something I have wanted to learn for a long time. I’d really like for a friend to take lessons with me, but my friends are either too busy or not interested in learning to dive. So I’d be starting totally on my own, not knowing any other divers. Can you give me some tips on getting started and meeting others to dive with?

You are in the same situation that I was years ago.

First, find a dive shop in your area. If there are multiple shops, do any of them have a dive club?

Second, take the basic open water course from that dive shop. Try to sign up for a group class. Do your certification dives locally (instead of internationally). Get the names of the people in your certification class. You’ll probably find a lot of people that will be interested in diving, but are lacking a dive buddy just like you.

Hopefully, there is some where local that a lot of diver will go to train. It may not be the best diving environment, but it allows you to dive.

If you like that dive shop, take some trips with them.

There is much to be said when discussing Grand Cayman scuba diving due to the history that is in the oceans there as well as because of the captivating underwater scenery. I am planning to learn scuba diving in the Philippines but I like the place to be low-priced but has a lot to offer terms of the beauty of the dive sites. i live in cyprus and i am planning to go scuba diving in the summer. i wanted to know how much scuba diving costs, where can i do it from and do we need some sort of training before we can go with our friends.

Costs can vary from dive shop to dive shop. Your best bet is to contact all your local shops to get a handle on their pricing. The average appears to be about 240 Euros. There are a few training agencies. Where can you do it from? Anywhere there’s water deep enough to dive in and within your certification qualifications. Yes…you do need training before diving. When you’ve completed it, you’ll receive a card with your picture on it. You’ll need that card to rent certain types of gear ( regs, tanks) or to have your own tanks filled. No card…no air.
Your first certification level is called an Open Water. It will allow you to dive to 60 feet on normal air with a certified buddy and in an environment that has no overhead preventing you from making a direct ascent to the surface. No caves and no penetration of wrecks. You can use this certification anywhere in the world.
There are further levels of certification you can go on to, when you’ve got enough dives under your belt, but the OW is your first one.

If you’re not sure about if you’d enjoy diving or not, some shops with PADI offer what’s called Discover Scuba. It’s a mini course designed to get you in a pool with an Instructor supervising you. You’ll get to try scuba for an hour or so in a nice safe place. The cost is usually minimal and sometimes (depending on the dive shop) free. You won’t become certified, but it’s a cheap way to find out if you’d like to spend the money to get properly certified.
