Jack Johnson - My Opinions

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Jack Johnson a surfer from Hawaii turned singer/songwriter. He received his breakthough on one of his friend’s albums, Garrett Dutton III of G Love and Special Sauce. Johnson’s song Rodeo Clowns appeared on G Love’s album Philadelphonic. Then one of his demos made it to J.P Plunier who is also producer for Ben Harper. Plunier went on to produce Jack Johnson’s debut album Brushfire Fairytales. Ben Harper does appear on one track off the album. The album managed to reach to the top forty.

His music is best classified as easy listening. Easy to relax to and not pay a lot of attention to. Unfortunately if you pay too close of attention to his music you’ll find that he is not very diverse. A majority of his songs all tend to have the same sound and similar feel. That’s not what Jack Johnson is all about though. It is nice to have an artist that is relaxing to listen to.

I personally Jack Johnson is at his best with just his guitar where he can sing his happy and mellow tunes. One of his most original albums is Brushfire Fairytales. It combines a lot of his initial recordings of just him and his guitar with the full sound of some accompaniment.
Another great thing about Jack Johnson is that he is accessible to both guy sand girls. Most of his songs are love songs. He manages to do it in a masculine enough way that it is not real sappy. He will probably be around for along time but never really have any critical success with nay top hits. If you like his style you can count on him for some easy fun to listen to stuff.

Some of Jack Johnson albums include Brushfire Fairytales, On and On, Thicker Than Water: Original Soundtrack, and In Between Dreams.

What to Photograph in Los Angeles

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

There are several places of interest in Los Angeles, not just in its big city but also in other famous cities which are part of the county. So here’s a list of where to go, what to visit and what’s worth capturing in that place.

HOLLYWOOD

This place is the capital of movie-making. Hollywood is famous all over the world for its movies, there’s no doubt about that. And of course, where movies are created, stars are also being born. This is the home to several celebrities.

Hollywood Sign - The most photographed in the place. The Sign is located on top of Hollywood Hills and is normally visible from the distance. A good place to get a shot is the Hollywood & Highland.

Hollywood & Highland - This entertainment complex is a rather new attraction at Hollywood Boulevard. The Kodak Theater and Renaissance Hotel are integrated into it plus several shops, restaurants and a spacious courtyard.

Kodak Theater - Known as the home of the Oscars. The academy awards ceremony is being held here every year and it’s the dream destination of most movie stars who like to grace the annual red carpet show.

Grauman’s Chinese Theater - The most famous movie theater in the world which had been a host to important movie premieres. At its forecourt, you can find the hand and foot prints of several famous stars like Tom Hanks.

Walk of Fame - These are the stars embedded on the side walks along Hollywood Boulevard which are being honored to respective artists who contributed to the entertainment industry.

Historical Buildings of Hollywood - Among its most famous historical buildings are the Capitol Records Tower, the First National Bank of Hollywood, Masonic Temple, El Capitan Theater, Grauman’s Chinese and Egyptian Theater, and the Roosevelt Hotel. Mostly located at the famous Hollywood Boulevard.

Sunset Strip - A part of the long Sunset Bouleavard that is famous for boutiques, restaurants, clubs and its nightlife.

Melrose Place - This is an extension road of Melrose Avenue which is a home to several upscale stores and boutiques. Melrose Place was made famous by the TV Series after its name.

BEVERLY HILLS

This is a smaller city between Hollywood and Santa Monica which is famous to be the nest of the rich and famous. Some interesting places to see in the place are…

Beverly Hills City Hall - The beautiful building is designed in Italian-Renaissance and is normally illuminated during the night. The city hall was also featured in the film Beverly Hills Cop.

Rodeo Drive - A famous and expensive shopping area in Beverly Hills which is also known for its beautiful sidewalks and arcades.

SANTA MONICA

A coastal city part of Los Angeles known for its beach-front promenade, resorts, long boardwalk, shopping, amusement, restaurants and an upscale living at Pacific Palisades.

Santa Monica Pier - The pier is a must destination for its lively atmosphere and nice views of the beach. It has an amusement park which is a great subject of photography, especially during the night.

Santa Monica Boardwalk - A haven for bikers, rollerskaters and joggers. The boardwalk is stretched parallel to the beach, offers a relaxing and the same time fun atmosphere.

Santa Monica’s Beach - The city’s most famous natural attraction which is an all-time favorite because of the place’s beautiful weather. You can get a great panoramic photo of the beach and the nearby area while riding the Ferris Wheel at Santa Monica Pier.

MALIBU

Another favorite living place of the rich and famous because of its beautiful coastal view. Take a peek at the gorgeous beach houses lined up on the coast.

Malibu Beach - The beach got its worldwide fame during the 90’s from the very famous TV series, Baywatch. Stars on the show like Pamela Anderson fell in love with the place that she even bought a villa here.

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES

At downtown LA, you’ll find the city’s financial district. It is the home to banks, offices, hotels, business establishments and institutions, and upscale shops. These normally are the one defining the city’s skyline.

City’s Skyline - To get a good shot of the skyline, drive your way up to Mulholland Drive. From there, you’ll have a sweeping view of the city and its skyline.

Los Angeles City Hall - This white huge building was once the tallest upon its completion and was recently featured in the film War of the Worlds.

These all in all can contribute to a great Los Angeles photo collection. Enjoy!

The Latest Season of Dancing With The Star

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Whatever this season is, I was tired of the dancing, judges, and contestants. I just couldn’t stand to watch Chloris Leachman. Nevertheless then along came Gilles Poet, Lil Kim, Ty Philologue, Melissa Rycroft, The Woz, Julianne’s sweetheart, Diet Wicks, Denise Richards, Shawn Johnson, and some others that certainly didn’t excite me.

Who did I find to be the most interesting? Gilles Marini was the one I couldn’t wait to see. I discovered Gilles when I saw Sex and the City where he stood out among a cast of talented actors and actresses. Proving he’s no one-act wonder, Gilles shows his other talents on Dancing with the Stars. He heats up the ballroom with his dance moves. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba said what a lot of female views were thinking - Gilles wife Carole is very lucky.

The big disappointment on the show was Denise Richards - she showed an almost total lack of both talent and personality. The Woz had the personality, but no talent. While Chuck Wicks put in 110% and stayed on the show week after week. I was not interested in watching Lil’ Kim, until I saw what an amazing dancer she turned out to be. Stepping up with great technicality, Derek Huff won me with his brilliant choreography. They were a team that showed talent as well as chemistry. That’s why I was very surprised when Lil’ Kim was knocked out of competition with four other couples still alive.

The final four, as I write, are Melissa and Tony, Ty and Chelsie, Gilles and Cheryl, Shawn and Mark. Melissa came in shortly before the show when Jewel was injured. Melissa didn’t struggle too much for someone with such little prep time - she has training in ballet. Her performances have been close to perfection, earning her perfect scores in the last show. Even if you get a perfect score from the judges, you still risk being voted off the show. Just like Sabrina Bryan. She received a perfect score in another season and was eliminated early. The celeb dancer who has shown real progress is World Champion rodeo cowboy Ty Murry. Murry’s legion of follower’s proved to be a huge advantage. Ty has stayed on the show because of the thousands voting for him and his adorable personality. Shawn Johnson, gold medal winning gymnast, showed us that she can perform on the hard dance floor just as well as she can on a soft mat. Then there’s Gilles who has never danced a dance I didn’t enjoy.

Just which couple has the chops and the votes to win the judge’s hearts? One dancing duo will be sent home this week. Who will it be? After that the three last dance teams have a final dance-off. You know what I’ll be watching that evening. I hope it lives up to the best moments that have already happened this season and we get to see the best final yet!

Getting your Dancing with the Stars fix in high definition is the greatest way to do it I’ve found. After several friends kept harping on how much of a difference it made I finally gave in and purchased a hi-def television, and boy am I happy I did! What a difference! HD really gives you that ‘you’re really there’ feeling. I had no idea how good it was. All I had to do once I got my new HD TV was contact Comcast Cable, my local provider, and add HD channels to my already low priced service. While I was at it I added Comcast High Speed Internet and Comcast Digital Voice for a super low triple play bundle rate. Not only is my television picture and sound the clearest I’ve ever experienced, my download speeds are amazing with my new broadband Internet service. As a bonus, they offer digital phone service at flat rate pricing. The phone is very clear and I can call friends and family around the US and never have to pay long distance charges. If you are moving to an area that is covered by Comcast, or it is your local cable provider, I recommend calling them sooner rather than later to order their great services. And if you search on the web you can probably some sites that offer the latest Comcast Cable promotions and savings. Make sure you take a look at their Triple Play bundle that lets you get all three services for one incredibly low price.

Does Size Matter When it Comes to Custom Rims and Tires?

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Yes it does. However, before one delves further into the subject, one has to understand tire codes. Altering a vehicle’s tire sizes, unlike customizing truck floor mats, dashboard covers, and car seat covers, is not something to be taken lightly.

Unfortunately, a lot of people can’t make heads or tails out of the codes labeled on their tires and therefore do not know what “P225/50R16 91S” means. Tire codes are very important if one intends to change his or her vehicles tires. Unlike changing truck floor mats, changing tires without knowledge of what one is doing could bring about adverse affects. Here’s a breakdown of the sample tire codes:

• The “P” means the tire is meant for passenger vehicles like mini vans cars, small trucks, and SUVs.
• The “225” is the measurement of the widest point of the tire’s outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner sidewall when installed.
• The “50” is the percent of the sidewall height relative to the width. (In this example, since the width is 225 millimeters, the sidewall height from the rim to the tread is 112.5mm)
• The “R” denotes how the internal construction of the tire was fabricated. In this example, “R” means radial.
• The “16” is the size of the rim.
• The “91S” is the service description of the tires. The “91” is the number that rates how much load the tires can handle. (The “91” in this example means that the tire can handle 1356 pounds.) The bigger the number, the greater the tire’s capacity.
• The “S” is the tire’s speed rating. (An “S” speed rating denotes that the tire can operate safely at speeds up to 112 miles per hour. The further down the alphabet, the higher the velocities that are safe for the tire.)

So what does this all mean? Typically, a car that’s made for speed will have a wider width with a low alphabet letter (generally W, Y, or Z) and a low percentage of sidewall for optimal handling and steering capabilities. A passenger vehicle, meanwhile, will have a medium width and a higher percentage of sidewall for a more luxurious style.

Tinkering with tires without knowledge about tire sizes is a dangerous thing to do. Here are some of the reasons:

• Odometers and speedometers are calibrated based on the height of a vehicle’s tires. Taller tires make speedometers read slower than the actual speed of the vehicle.
• More recent vehicles have built-in computers that base calculations on the height of a vehicle’s tires. Changing tires could result to a vehicle’s components malfunctioning.
• Stock suspension systems could suffer additional stress with taller tires, resulting in accelerated wear, tear, and/or failure. If one makes substantial changes in tire height, one should upgrade and bolster the vehicle’s stock suspension.

Below is a list of different tire sizes and what vehicle classes should use them.

• 34″ x 8″ – Class “A” Motorhome
• 31-1/4″ x 12″ - Class “C” Motorhome
• 30 3/4″ x 10″ – Isuzu Rodeo, Honda Passport
• 29-3/4″ x 8″ – Blazer II 4X4, Jeep Wagoneer
• 30″ x 10″ – Jeep Liberty
• 29″ x 8″ – Econoline 150 GM ½ Ton, Dodge Raider, Chevy Van
• 35″ x 12 -1/2″ - Hummer H2
• 27″ x 8″ - S10 Blazer, Cherokee Laredo 4X4, GMC S15, Honda CRV
• 25-1/2″ x 8″ = M - Astro, Safari, Geo Tracker
• 24″ x 8″ - Pop-up Campers
• 21 1/2″ x 8″ - Pop-up Campers
• 32-1/4″ x 12″ – Off Road Extra Wide Tires

Stagecoach Country Music Festival Tickets - Raging Lineup for the Golden State!

Friday, August 13th, 2010

With the lineup for California’s biggest country music festival just announced, it looks like its third annual event will be its biggest ever. With headliners that include Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, Reba McEntire and Kid Rock making the list of initial performers, Stagecoach Country Music Festival tickets are already going to be hard to come by with more than four months to go!

Performing for the third time at Indio, California’s Empire Polo Club this April, the event will not only house some of the best country music, but also some of the nation’s best Bar-B-Que and more festival events that will get your riled up for some amazing guitar strumming and boot kickin’! Just because Californian’s are surrounded by the beauty of the ocean and the mountains doesn’t mean that they can’t enjoy a little hootenanny - and with the biggest stars set to headline the event this year, the liberals on the west coast are sure to peel off their yearly-worn sandals and throw on some cowboy boots for an event like this. Country fans tired of their friends bragging about little known (to them) bands performed at Coachella, the Stagecoach Country Music Festival is the counterpart to the rock scene and will be every bit as exciting. Check out http://www.stubhub.com/stagecoach-country-music-festival-tickets/ today to get your own tickets.

The lineup for 2009 was listed on Stagecoach’s website, which also includes Miranda Lambert, Earl Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Jeff Walker, Reverend Horton Heat, Little Big Town, Poco, The Charlie Daniels Band, Darius Rucker (from Hootie and the Blowfish), Lynn Anderson, Dale Watson, Chris Cagle, Lady Antebellum, Ralph Stanley, Doyle Lawson, The Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, Danielle Peck, The Zac Brown Band, The Duhks, Waddie Mitchell, Randy Houser, Hot Club of Cowtown and James Intveld.

The event is a rodeo of California’s country fans of sorts, complete with a mechanical bull, activities for the kids via the Half-Pint Hootenanny kids area and an expansion for all those RV’s that roll in. The festival, put together by Coachella company Goldenvoice, was expanded last year to three days when the Eagle’s made a last minute performance for a bonus day. The Eagles headlined a day all to themselves after their Grammy win for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group for “How Long” just weeks prior to the event. This year is set to remain at two, but with all the country cancellations that have been occurring as of late, who knows what will happen to the all star lineup as the months pass. Last year the attendance doubled what it was from the year previous (aka its debut year) from 55,000 to 120,000, with headliners that included Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Trace Adkins, Dierks Bentley, Big & Rich, Dwight Yoakam, George Jones and a reunion of The Judds.

AEG also puts on the event with Goldenvoice, another player in the original Coachella mixture. The music man behind all of AEG’s success, Chuck Morris, recently talked to media outlets about plans for a new festival for 2010. The company, which throws down Coachella followed by Stagecoach just a week apart, could add another “drawing board,” according to the Denver Post, stamp for AEG either the week before or after the Mile High Music Festival with yet another genre bending festival.

Abilene, Texas

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Abilene is a small city in central West Texas that started out around 1880 as not much more than a cattle stock shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway. The railroad still divides the city down the center with the historic downtown area on the north side. These days, Abilene is a vibrant community of higher learning, colorful local culture and old-time Christian spirituality. It’s also won fame in music and movies. There was a pop and country hit song in 1963 by George Hamilton IV called “ Abilene ,” and the city was featured in the movies “Holes” and “Southland Tales.”

Abilene can boast an impressive number of celebrities from the worlds of sports and entertainment who were born or lived there. Randall “Tex” Cobb, an actor and prize fighter, Olympic pole vaulter Billy Olson, Washington Redskins Terry Orr, Olympic gold medal winner Bobby Morrow, singer-actress Jessica Simpson, actress Ann Wedgeworth, country musicians Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, country musician Lee Roy Parnell, actors Ty O’Neal and Fess Parker are all part of the fabric of Abilene’s rich history.

Recently the Abilene Arts Alliance took steps to connect its city’s original cattlemen’s pioneer spirit with today’s new life frontiers. Promoting Abilene ’s new nickname “Frontiering,” the Alliance is striving to show that Abilene is stepping up to the plate to meet the ever-changing challenges of technology, energy, education and especially the arts. Traditional events, such as the West Texas Fair and Rodeo held every year in mid-September, delight visitors with authentic exhibits and amusements from the days of Abilene ’s founding fathers. The Western Heritage Classic in early May has many more eclectic activities such as sheepdog trials, campfire cook-offs, Cowboy Poets Society and a Western art show.

Newer events abound. The Erinshire Folk Festival began in 2003 to spotlight the musicians and original music of the Abilene area. Abilene hosts the Abilene Gem and Mineral Show, the Abilene Gun and Knife Show, the West Texas Book and Music Festival, as well as September’s annual “Cruise Night,” a parade of classic and modern sports cars. Year round, Abilene is home to The Grace Museum, the Abilene Philharmonic, and the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, the restored Paramount Theatre and Center for Contemporary Arts, and the Abilene Zoo. Abilene even has the “Jammin’ Jumpers,” one of the only competing and performing jump rope teams in the area. The 13-acre Abilene Zoo is a popular attraction in Abilene , boasting several hundred animals of hundreds of species.

Abilene is also home to three church-related institutions of higher learning which US News and World Report has recognized all three as top private liberal arts colleges: Abilene Christian University ( Church of Christ ); Hardin-Simmons University (Baptist) and McMurry University (Methodist). In 2006 Abilene was also ranked as the 17th city in the nation for their public education system and the highest ranked city in Texas .

Things to See and Do in Mount Isa Qld

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

The tall mining stack is in sight before we drive into the mining city of Mount Isa in outback Queensland. In this multi-cultural city, there is only a small population of 26,000 with another 36,000 living on the outskirts in remote communities and on properties. So how does this make Mount Isa the largest city in the world? The city limits cover over 40,000 sq kilometres and the main street is over 188 klms long.

CITY LOOKOUT shows you a constantly changing view across this outback oasis. It is easier for me to understand the beginnings of Mount Isa since I have read an interesting history book. I can really appreciate what the first settlers endured without water and suffering from the extreme heat and weather conditions.

THE UNDERGROUND HOSPITAL was built by the miners during the war in 1942 to prepare for Japanese bombing. In 1959, the present day hospital was built and the underground hospital was renovated in 1977 and now opens for tourists from April to September from 10.00am to 2.00pm. Closed during the wet season.

HARD TIMES MINE lowers you down 1.2 klms so you will experience something special. Your tour guide who has worked as a miner for most of his life, will kit you out in over-alls and cap lamps. He will tell you interesting tales of the old days while you are descending in the Alimak Cage. You can get up close and work the air-leg drill, and also feel the earth rumble when the blast face is fired. Tours run 7 days per week but bookings are essential.

PAPER MAKING is demonstrated at the Mill, Arilla Paper, which is located at the Old Mining Museum in Shackleton Street and you can watch Indigenous women weave their magic with local grasses, trees, reeds such as buffle grass, spinifex and river gum leaves.

THE RIVERSLEIGH FOSSIL CENTRE in town has some very interesting finds of fossils dug out of the nearby fossil fields. Tourists are able to share landmark discoveries with their resident Palaeontologist on a daily basis. These fossils are found on a cattle property about 250klms north-west of town. From 1983, the beautifully preserved remains of thousands of inhabitants such as giant pythons, marsupial lions and carnivorous kangaroos have been excavated from limestone rocks that are 10 to 15 million years old. Opening Times: 8.30am-5.00pm daily. Lab tours Monday to Friday 10am & 2.00pm (Closed Christmas Day and Good Friday)

THE ROYAL FLYING DOCTORS CENTRE can offer you an insight into this essential flying service. It offers vital care to the injured or seriously ill among the population scattered over 500,000 square klms, as well as regular clinic care to remote regions and inter-hospital transfers. This service has been available from Mt Isa since 1964, and is on call 24 hrs per day, 7 days per week. Pilots must be able to land on anything from roads, dirt strips and paddocks. Doctors and nurses must be prepared to conquer any conditions to get to their patient. Location is 11 Barkly Highway, Mount Isa. The Centre Opening times are Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm. Entry by donation.

FRANK ASTON MUSEUM is partly underground and has displays on the history of Mt Isa and about the local aboriginal people. There is also a lot of old mining gear and flying doctors radios and a huge crocodile skull. It is not only a museum, but also has a long 65m tunnel, with five smaller chambers and a large 100sq metre chamber, which was mined into the hill under the one of the town’s early reservoir tanks. The museum features a simulated Aboriginal camp showing tribal customs of the district. The Frank Aston Museum can be found at Shackelton Street, Mount Isa. Opening times are daily from 9.00am to 4.00pm.

CLIMATE in Mount Isa is worth knowing as the cooler months are between April and September. The summer heat can be very stifling as day temperatures can reach over 40degrees Celcius. The city has two types of summer weather, hot and dry or hot and wet. The city averages 9.5 hours of sunshine a day and the annual rainfall of 437 mm tumbles down in the 50 wet days a year. Summer night-time temperatures hardly ever fall below the mid-twenties. The winter dry season will usually find the skies coloured a brilliant blue, with daytime temperatures in the mid-twenties and pleasant nights averaging 12.5C. The coldest recorded winter temperature is 2.5C.

There are many other sights to see when you visit Mount Isa. It is also home to the second largest rodeo in the world, held every August. I find the history of Mount Isa to be so interesting and heart-rendering for the early pioneers with their exploits and adventures often leading to illness and death. They are truly extraordinary people to be admired.
