What is a great gift for my equestrian girlfriend?

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

My girlfriend is an equestrian and it is a pretty big part of her life and her horse means a lot to her. So i’d like to get her something special for Christmas that is equestrian related. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

Well if you go along to wherever she buys her horse gear there will be tons of stuff to look at . Everything from subscriptions to equestrian magazines to saddles costing a fortune. But unless you know what she has and exactly what she would want it is a bit chancy just buying something cos she will have definite ideas on what sort of equestrian equipment she wants and to buy her the wrong thing would not be good.

Super Bowl Xliii - Raymond James Stadium Tampa, Florida 2009

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

It is a professional football championship game which includes participants from the championships of the American Football Conference, AFC and the National Football Conference, NFC. The Super Bowl 43 game will broadcast on Sunday 1 February 2009, and will be watched by millions of football fans all over the globe, popularly known as Super Bowl Sunday by the football fans.

The game is planned to kick off at approximately 6:28 p.m. EST and will be watched by more than 72,500 people in real, at the stadium itself. The winning team will be awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy, which is awarded each year to the winning team of the NFL League annual championship game.

Raymond James Stadium has already held several Super Bowls before, which include Super Bowl XXXV in 2001, Super Bowl XVIII in 1981 and Super Bowl XXV in 1991. It also holds several annual events like the Outback Bowl (NCAA football), Monster Jam and American Invitational equestrian. The stadium has a grass surface and has been a ten-time winner of award for best field in the NFL.

2009 will be the fourth time Tampa Bay will host a Super Bowl Game and the second game to be held at the Raymond James Stadium. The game will be broadcast on NBC on television and also on the radio network through CBS Radio / Westwood One in English and Spanish. Preparations for the Super Bowl XLIII Game have already been in place, which started last year with the planting of thousands of trees to help to “Green” Super Bowl. This step was taken to counteract the emissions that will be caused by the upcoming Super Bowl XLIII event. The NFL and Super Bowl committee partnered with the marines and Forestry division organizations to plant 700 one-gallon red mangrove trees along the Terra Ceia shoreline in Tampa. Dozens of volunteers and youngsters joined the staff to plant these trees at two different sites in the Bay Area.

The last game of this event was Super Bowl XLI which was played on 4 February 2007, at the Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Indianapolis Colts from the American Football Conference, AFC were the champions who defeated Chicago Bears from the National Football Conference, NFC by 29 - 17. This was Colts first appearance in a Super Bowl game since 1970 when they won Super Bowl V held at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida. Baltimore Colts defeated Dallas Cowboys from the National Football Conference, with 16 – 13 as the football results.
This 2009 Super Bowl Sunday will bring more excitement when the game will reach more than 100 million viewers worldwide.

I-Saddles: Differences Between Horse Riding Saddles (part 1)

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Horse Saddle: I am the lovely piece of work placed on the horse’s back for riders to sit upon. I ensure stability for both the rider and the horse, and distribute the weight of the rider evenly on the horse’s back. I come in many different forms, numerous enough to make your head spin. My variations are shaped in regards to location [in terms of English, Australian, Western, German etc], tree types [in terms of Wade, flex Tree, treeless etc], production technique [handmade custom or manufactured], materials [Leather or synthetic], activity [parading, roping, show, endurance, racing, trail, reining etc] etc.

English Saddle: I am the saddle used to ride horses in “English riding” disciplines world wide. Though with an English background, I am not limited in use by English speaking countries or in England alone. I have features that make me unique and stand out as envy in the equestrian world. My Stirrups can be detached from the saddle [in case of an emergency]. I have a piece of equipment known as a girth, which is used to keep me in place on a horse. It passes under the barrel of the equine, usually attached to me on both sides by two or three leather straps called billets. My rare end has a subtle and not-too-obvious feature known as the cantle. This is used to provide greater comfort and security to riders. I generally cover a smaller surface area, yet have proven to be more effective with simplicity. Much of the weight bearing area in me is supported by a large internal flocking inside the panels.

Australian saddle: I am the saddle used for activities requiring long hours on the horse. I came as a variation of the English saddle eons ago, but have soon developed my own uniqueness as time went by. I have a distinct feature known as the Knee pad [aka 'poleys'] to provide security for riders who ride in rough conditions & spend long hours on horses. The ‘poleys’ are usually located around a rider’s thigh in front of the saddle. I was designed to cater for the conditions ranging from soothing to the harshest. My seats are deeper than the typical English saddle and my cantle higher. I am kept on with a girth attached to the billets under the flaps.

Western Saddle: I am the saddle used for Western Riding in the United States of America, mainly in the ‘western’ part. I am often tagged with the ‘cowboy’ name. I was designed to provide both security & comfort to riders and their horses traveling long hours in harsh environment. I fancy being flashy and different, I tend not to like ’simplicity’, because I pride myself at being unique and robust. I don’t call my girths ‘girths’ [you bet] but cinch. My Stirrups cannot be detached from me in an emergency, but instead I have a wider tread; combined with the rider’s high-heeled boots. The design minimizes the risk that the rider will slip through the stirrups during a fall, and the rider being dragged. My cantle is one of the most obvious of all horse saddles, providing greater comfort and security. I cover a wider surface area than the Typical English or Australian saddle. My cinch is tied on with a flat strap of leather or nylon known as a latigo. I have no padding between the tree and the external leather and fleece skirting… Okay, okay, it seems I brag a lot, but really, I am truly unique because I am the most ‘modified’ and truly customized to suit rider’s tastes. And I am often used for ’show’ purposes. Yeah, I show-off a lot! But there are no ‘best’ kinds of saddles anywhere, only suitable and familiar ones.

Horse: I am the tamed animal Humans ride upon. I know not of western, English, Australian, Portuguese, German or even youth saddles. I only know it when my back hurts if the seating equipment placed on it pokes my spine or is not properly fitted- I ‘neighhhhhhh’ at the rider, indicating pain and discomfort- and I know when it does not. I love humans, and would give my full agility and beauty to the ones who seat on me properly.

What is the usual tuition for a good Equestrian summer camp?

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

I want to go to an overnight summer camp any where in the states, i would like it to be a good one. so i was looking at culver but the approximate cost is about $6,500 and that is a lot of money. although Culver is a great summer camp and it has diverse activities to choose. Should i go to culver, are the prices of other good equestrian camps equal? and what other camps should i consider?

This depends to a large extent on where the camp is located and who is running it, Kisa. There are horse camps for every level of rider, in every state in the country ( I take it that you must be from Australia or somewhere in the southern hemisphere, where it’s nearly the end of the winter) and they vary widely in terms of their costs and the types of activities offered. It would help if I knew a bit more about what your riding interests are and what your ability level is, but since you’ve indicated an interest in the camp at the Culver Military Academy, I can tell you a little bit about that.

Culver Academy is a private, military style school for girls and boys in grades 7 through 12 that is located in the northern part of the state of Indiana, in the American Midwest. You are correct about its reputation-it is well known as one of the best preparatory schools in the country, and is the home of the famous "Black Horse Troop" which has been seen and has perfomed at numerous events- everything from the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California to the recent presidential inaugural parade. The school does offer a summer program and camp, yes, but it’s held during OUR SUMMER, which is the dead of the winter for you, Kisa, when you would normally be in school yourself. The impression I get from your question is that you may be thinking of coming here either this year ( it’s already almost autumn here now, most summer camps are closed for the season, and our schools and universities have just opened for the fall semester) or perhaps in your summer, which occurs during OUR winter season. If you come to the States at that time, you’ll be disappointed, because no camp operates year round, even at a place like Culver. If you want to attend a summer camp in the States, you are going to have to travel here at the BEGINING of your winter, or perhaps in the late fall. In addition, you’ll need to sign up and pay your camp fees way in advance if you want to get a spot at a place like Culver ( and I will give you the name and web address of another camp which you should check out that is even better than Culver in a lot of ways) because these places fill up fast and competition for spots at them is keen. I am not sure that the school you attend is going to be very thrilled with the idea of your taking 3 months off in the winter to attend camp- that may not go over very well, and you need to clear it with the school officials BEFORE you sign up for camp or make reservations to fly over. Otherwise, problems could result- serious ones.

The other camp I want to mention to you, which does operate year round, at least to some degree, is the International Riding Camp for girls, which is located in upstate New York, in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. ( The US has numerous mountain ranges- there are two of them in New York state alone.) IRC is also a privately owned and run camp, and they have campers from around the world, which may be of interest to you. Their website is www.internationalridingcamp.com, and you should check this out. Culver is a good camp, but it’s not the only fish in the sea. You may decide you like IRC better. Good luck in your search.

Alghero Fly Drive: Things to See & Do Around Alghero, Sardinia

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

The great thing about Sardinia is……actually there are many great things about Sardinia which is why doing a fly/drive style escape here is ideal. Not only do you get to delve into its rich historical past, laze around on perfect, sandy beaches and dine on fabulous, fresh seafood but you can do it all with a sense of wild, abandonment.

No matter which Sardinia airports you fly into, Alghero Airport in the northwest, Cagliari Airport in the south or Olbia Airport in the northeast, it is possible to arrange car hire. If your choose to start your gypsy-esque adventure in the northwest though, the Aghero Airport car hire companies are AM Service, Avis, Easy, Europcar, Hertz, Maggiore, Midarent, Ruviolo, Sardinya, Sicily and Thrifty.

Alghero itself is a great place to start, although not the most traditionally Sardinian. This area is heavily influenced by the Catalonians, with Catalan still the official language. Although a mecca for sun worshippers and marine enthusiasts with a wide range of water sports available from windsurfing through to yachting, Sardinia is packed full of archaeological and architectural wonders that are worth exploring.

Possibly the closest of these treasures and not far from Sardinia Alghero Airport itself is Anghelu Ruju, a necropolis discovered only in 1903. This network of underground tombs date back to Neolithic times and are intricately decorated inside with pillars, fascias and even bulls´ heads. Although the findings have been removed, replicas can be found at the Museo e Tenuta Vitivinicola situated 1km further up the Porte Torres road. There are no refreshments on sale at the tombs however so if you plan to have a good look round bring your own refreshment with you. Tickets cost around 2 euros.

A 45 minute drive further north up the coast is Argentiera, an old abandoned mining town. From the Roman era until as late as 1963, silver was mined here, when production ceased as the source ran out. Everything that was once used, from the shafts to the miners´ quarters and chapel, remain intact but without human occupation the atmosphere is eerie and unsettling.

If the experience at Argentiera leaves you with a chill, then head to the powder white beach of La Pelosa, near Stintino, an hour´s drive from Algherro on the northwestern tip. Tourists are well-catered for here with restaurants and cafes. From here though there is also an option to go totally native by hiring a boat across to the beaches of the Asinara National Park where small albino donkeys, wild sheep and pigs roam.

Going in the other direction, travelling south on the SP49 for 45 minutes from Alghero, is Bosa. The only river side town in the whole of Sardinia, Bosa is relatively unspoilt by tourism and provides a wonderful way to wile away an afternoon strolling through the cobbled streets and admiring the charming squares and 16th century grand houses. Overlooking the town is the Castello Malaspina, the remains of a medieval fortress, and to the south is the Cathedral, whose mixed heritage of styles affords it a great example of rococo architecture. Wander down to the marina for lunch and admire the stunning Spanish Watchtower while you eat.

An hour on and you come to Tharros, an archaeological treat. Founded in the 8th century BC by the Phoenicians and later inhabited by the Romans before being abandoned in 1000AD, the area is now treated as an open air museum where you can walk around the tophet (outdoor sacred area), baths, temple, houses and artisan workshops. Excavations are still being done here and much of the artifacts discovered are displayed at the Antiquarium Arborense Museum in nearby Oristano, worth a visit in itself for its for its elaborate Gothic and baroque architecture and home to the famous equestrian tournament in February called Sartiglia. If you´re ready to visit a beach again then the popular Torre Grande is minutes away and has the biggest tower in Sardinia with a base diameter of almost 20m.

Back in Alghero and a trip to this thriving port would not be complete without a visit to the Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune´s Grotto). The caverns can be reached by boat or by road and are located at the bottom of 656 steps cut into the cliff wall. The views are spectacular both on the way down, looking out over the sea, and once inside as the stalactites and stalagmites are lit up to for maximum impact. Tours last around 45 mins and cost approximately 10 euros.

What are some equestrian events in Howard County, MD that are accessible to all riding levels?

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

I am the president of my school’s Equestrian Club and I am looking for some events that our members can attend. We have all levels: people who have never seen a horse up close before to competing on the A show circuit. Affordability is also an issue.
I’m always on the lookout for trail rides that are affordable ($40 or less ideally) and cater to different riding levels (ie. not walking nose to tail the entire time). I’ve tried Misty Manor but it’s kind of a dump.

try searching yahoo groups under horse and then Maryland as their are some good ones and will usually help keep you in the link of what is going on.

Pinehurst Golf Vacations Offer More than Just Golf

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Pinehurst golf vacations can offer you a bit more than just playing golf. Although it is not designed to provide the same family entertainment that Myrtle Beach is capable of, Pinehurst offers a choice of golf schools and a choice of entertainment and sports for the younger family members.

Pinehurst is close to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, and is best known for its golf. With around 5000 inhabitants, Pinehurst has eight main championship golf courses with a total of over forty in the surrounding area. It also boasts several good golf schools and academies, and is an excellent choice for a golf vacation.

Pinehurst Offers a Number of Sporting Options

If your family does not share your love of golf, Pinehurst offers a number of different sporting options. It is an equestrian area, and many equestrian activities are available such as horse riding and lessons, horse jumping and so on. There are many lakes nearby and boating, canoeing and other water sports are offered. Fishing and hunting are popular, but perhaps not with the younger children. They may prefer tennis and there is also carting and bowling nearby.

Should the family want something offering more in the way of holiday fun, Myrtle Beach with its great beaches and funfairs is only a short trip away, and the nightlife at Myrtle Beach is superb.

There’s an Affinity between Pinehurst and Scotland

However, it is for the golf that people vacation in Pinehurst, and several packages are available to suit individuals, groups and family groups. The village is where Ben Hogan won his first pro tournament, and the first courses were designed by, or modified by, the great Scottish course designer, Donald Ross. There is great Scottish tradition in Pinehurst any many Scots feel an affinity with the town.

The golf schools in Pinehurst include The Pinehurst Golf Academy where you can make bookings for a golf school vacation from March to November, which is great way of getting some golf in while improving your game. You can use them to get some badly needed tuition in the fall so you are ready for the new season in the spring. It’s a great alternative to a summer golfing vacation.

If your whole family loves golf, Pinehurst would make a great vacation and the food is excellent with Japanese and other forms of international cuisine as well as the traditional American fare. You could try some Mexican for a change, though the kids might prefer a burger or hot dog.

Pinehurst Offers Golf Schools for the Beginners

You can get special family deals on the courses, and there are plenty of practice facilities available. The golf schools are good for the complete beginners in your group, but make sure you book places well in advance. The Nike Golf School is a form of camp and is great of the younger children. If you book your youngsters into the Nike camp to learn the game, and yourself and your partner into a Pinehurst resort, you get the best of both.

You both enjoy your golf, while your youngsters enjoy the camp while learning how to play. It won’t be long till they are joining you on the big courses on your next golfing vacation. Pinehurst golf vacations have a lot to offer if you think about what there is and use the resources to your best advantage.

How do they transport the horses for equestrian to China for the Olympics?

Friday, June 18th, 2010

By plane or boat? I know that they must transport them also when they sell them internationally or for other prestigious international horse shows. It must be VERY expensive! I’m guessing that most of the equestrian riders come from wealthy families. Horses aren’t cheap, are they horse owners??? Anyways, I was just wondering about the transportation. I’m assuming they fly them in special cargo planes like they use for transporting zoo animals and/or special livestock.

The travel by airplane. After a seven-day quarantine in Europe, the US horses flew to the equestrian site in Hong Kong ‘as part of a global migration that will ultimately include 297 horses from 47 nations travelling on 57 airplanes.’
