Where did intramural basketball originate and how can you start an intramural basketball team?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Who came up with the idea of intramural basketball?

just taking a guess here…intramural basketball came about because students like competitive sports but weren’t quite good enough or just didn’t want the commitment that came along with playing college ball, sooo they made a league where they can actually compete with out the rigid commitment.

i think you can start one by just getting a team together and signing them up wherever your school intramural sports are usually held.

Basketball Drills Secrets Of The Zone

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Writer Glen C. Brown author of `Secrets Of The Zone Press` writes from this extraordinary coaching and basketball skilled book.

`In the writing of a text on a coaching system for a major competitive sport, the author is immediately under suspicion that he has withheld his own `secret formula` for success.

So a coach, player or basketball fan who takes a serious interest in the game that was originated and has been perfected in the United States may greet this volume with some trepidation.

Such was my first reaction when asked by Glenn Brown to write an introduction to this volume on the art of basketball coaching.

This man has been a prep and college player, head coach of an outstanding U. S. Army team, coach at an Illinois high school of more than 2,000, coach at an Indiana high school with the largest high school field house in the world that seats 10,000. He is now a successful college coach and is far from leaving his chosen profession any time soon.

Likewise, he hasn`t changed his system or dropped it so he is willing to reveal the system he has been using all this time.

Here, the man who has compiled a 229-115 all-time basketball record as a coach of every age and type of player, has `bared` his basketball soul.

Most books of this type are highly technical, but Brown has, through careful diagrams and simple explanations, treated each phase of the game with simplicity.`

And what a book it is! Whether you are a coach, player or simply interested in basketball, this book is an absolute must have! There is not another more detailed script of game in any book on the planet! It is foundational, it is creative and genius! Yes, basketball players must be creative and genius in using feet, hands and brains! Please, don`t even question it! This is the manual you won`t want to share because it is so good that you want to keep it secret! Coaches, teachers, students, players and basketball lovers must get this book in their hands or downloaded onto their computers. Bar none, this book is diagramed, detailed and contains the works, study and experience that will `land you in the basketball zone`. You will feel like that 3-pointer ball that has just been `swished` and made by your favorite team in the last minute of the game.

If that isn`t exciting enough, then think of your `child` or `grandchild` receiving the book and excelling in an all time favorite sport! I love basketball, both playing and watching, but I especially enjoy learning about it and this book is a golden treasure for anyone to own! This book contains actual drills, in written words and diagrams and is easy to understand. I would not even hesitate, I would Jump up and grab this `basketball drill secret zone book`. You will be exceedingly ecstatic and on the court! I would recommend this book to my children, my children`s children and their children beyond! It`s a timelessly classic book that is universally effective!

Hoops anyone? `Got Game?`

You will now! Just get your hands on this incredible `Basketball Zone Book` and `Look out courts!`

The ball is about to hit the backstop! … Dunk!

Basketball Accessories

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Basketball fans nowadays need not limit themselves to availing only of caps and jerseys as their sign of loyalty to a certain team because there are already a wide range of accessories that they can get. These items are usually collectible items not only because of their prices but because they represent the all-star series of basketball teams. There is a special item for every special member of your family.

While wristbands and headbands are the normal accessories one could find for a basketball lover, there are now pen sets, watches, pins, socks, school packs, and embroidered leather checkbook covers, even a lei. Hoop fans who love dogs could also buy a dog collar with a logo of their favorite team. Christmases won’t even lack a touch of basketball with a special Santa’s stocking and glass ornament.

If you are the kind that wants to get pins from an NBA season, there are pin sets that usually feature a particular season with the set containing 3 pins.

If you fancy giving watches to loved ones or even buying one for yourself, there are team or all-star ladies water resistant watches that are either stainless steel or brass with gold tones. Men’s watches come in almost always stainless steel with others sporting a leather band. Even kids are not spared because there are also future star kids watches for girls and boys with colors that would really catch the eyes of your young ones.

Going to school won’t also stop one from showing some basketball team spirit because there are now school packs and pens featuring different team. The usual combo school pack contains 3 portfolio folders, 2 single subject notebooks and 3 memo pad booklets. There is also a pen set that has 3 retractable ballpoint pens in soft-grip and designed in team colors with logos.

Hoop fans who would want to wear team socks could also provide matching ones for their babies because there are also team bootie socks. A matching feeding bottle could even be found.

During Christmas season, one could mix the traditional with the contemporary. You could still hang a Christmas Santa stocking but one bearing a team logo while you deck your Christmas tree with traditional glass ornaments with team logos. The stocking comes in white felt while the glass ornaments come in the traditional Christmas colors of green and red.

Even most dependable mom could be a recipient of a basketball collectible. With her ever busy with balancing the accounts for home, you could thank Mom by giving a leather checkbook cover specially embroidered with a team’s logo.

If you want to show team spirit the Hawaiian way, there are even leis in game colors of royal blue and red available. After wearing the lei to a game, you could always hang it along with your other memorabilias of games past attended.

Whatever your age, whatever your likes . . . there is always a basketball accessory available to fit your tastes. Whether it be fancy or just plain practical, one could never go amiss by giving a collectible that would show how you just love being a basketball fan.

History

Duke basketball is one of the ideal programs in the history of college basketball. They currently set at #4 in all-time wins. Duke has won four national championships & also appeared in a total of fifteen Final Fours. To prove their greatness, Duke has nine previous players named National Player of the Year.

Not only those eleven players, but also a total of 71 players drafted into the NBA. Duke has more current players on NBA rosters than any other college program. Something very unusual is that Duke’s current head basketball coach has been at the school for 30 years.

Duke also has the most ACC(Atlantic Coast Conference)  regular season championships with nineteen. On top of that, winning eighteen ACC tournament titles. UCLA is the only team that’s been ranked as the #1 team longer than Duke.

They have also garnered a total of fifty-five All-Americans. To show their academic side, they have a total of fourteen Academic All-Americans. Under current coach Mike Krzyewski, Duke has made the NCAA Tournament 26 times. They have been to 19 Sweet Sixteens.

They have been chosen as the #1 seed within the tournament 11 times. 11 seasons of 30+ wins. Krzyewski has won an amazing 795 games with only 220 losses in these 30 years of being coach at Duke. They have won all four championships under his control & the most recent coming in 2010.

Former Duke Basketball Greats

There have been a number or prior Duke basketball greats. From Dick Groat in 1952 to the more recent  J.J Redick in 2005. There have been a total of nine past Duke players named Player of the Year. Groat won the award back in 1952. Art Heyman followed next in 1963. Johnny Dawkins won the award in 1986.

Danny Ferry took the honor in 1989. Christian Laettner won it in 1992. Elton Brand garnered the award in 1999. Shane Battier followed by winning in 2001. Jason Williams won the award in 2002 the next year right after Battier won it. The final claim to this award goes to J.J. Redick back in 2005.

The two biggest names on this lists are probably Danny Ferry & Christian Laettner. Ferry played at Duke from 1985-1989. He won first team All-American in 1989 & second team All-American in 1988. Ferry has the single game scoring record at Duke with 58 points in a game. He ranks 5th all-time in points & also 5th in total rebounds.

Laettner played at Duke from 1989-1992. Laettner is known in NCAA Tournament history for hitting the game-winning buzzer beater against Kentucky back in 1992. This game-winning shot gave Duke the East tournament finals & propelled them into the Final Four. He holds NCAA Tournament records for scoring, free throws made, free throws attempted, & most games played.

He is also currently the all-time Duke leader in 3-pt percentage at 48.5%. Laettner is also one of only four players to have played in 4 straight Final Fours. However, he’s the only one to have started in all Final Fours.

How to get recruited to basketball at a smart school like Harvard?

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

I am a sophomore, playing varsity basketball, have a 4.0 average, PACT score was a 28 (This will likely get over 30 by next year), 3 ap classes next year, 6ft. 7 and can dunk , forward position. I was wondering to make a basketball team like Harvard or Yale, ones where basketball program sucks but i get a good education, what should i do to get scouted, and do i have a chance of making it?

Ivy League schools don’t give out athletic scholarships, but playing basketball will you help you get in. Call up Harvard’s coach and ask him to watch one of your games. Have your coach contact Harvard’s coach and give you a recommendation. Good luck.

The Art of Rebounding a Basketball Without Letting the Ball "slip" Through Your Fingers

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

You cannot become a championship caliber team or player without dominating the backboard! The team that controls the backboard during a basketball game would most likely win. Why? More basketball rebounds leads to more possessions, and more possessions lead to more second-chance scoring opportunities. And, the team with the most second-chance scoring opportunities will win.

How important is rebounding? Every player on a team should learn how to rebound effectively, regardless of your position on the team. The reasoning behind this is that, every player should form the habit of attempting to grab the rebound after either an offensive or defensive shot has been made. Each player should always assume that the shot will be missed. With that being said, a team should have five solid rebounders on the basketball court at all times during a game.

What are the traits of a great basketball rebounder? Although your size and height as a basketball player could give you an advantage when attempting to rebound a basketball, they’re not the primary determining factors to becoming a great rebounder. For example, Dennis “the worm” Rodman was one of the most prolific rebounders in the NBA (National Basketball Association), despite the fact that he was an average height of 6-7″ as a professional basketball player and barely weighed 210 lbs. Although he was not a great scorer, his uncanny yet masterful ability to successfully grab rebounds (both on offense and defense) helped his teams win several NBA titles and earned him two consecutive defensive player of the year awards, which is an incredible accomplishment. What Dennis Rodman and other great rebounders knew is that, one of the main keys to effective rebounding is Positioning–not your height or size.

 Floor Positioning

A great rebounder always establishes an excellent floor position when attempting to grab a rebound. An excellent floor position means that you fight for the inside position by being closer to the basketball hoop than your opponent, regardless of whether you are trying to grab an offensive or defensive rebound.

 Grabbing the Rebound

Once you have established an inside position, the most effective way to grab a rebound is by leaping straight up in the air with great explosiveness and power using both feet, keeping your legs spread apart and butt pointing outward, and grabbing the basketball with both hands. Bring the basketball in front of you after you grab it instead of keeping it over your head.

This keeps your opponent away from you, and prevents him from grabbing the basketball or smacking it out of your hands as you are coming back down after you have grabbed the rebound.

Catch all rebounds instead of batting the basketball into the air or out of bounds. This would allow you and your team to maintain possession of the basketball.

Protecting the basketball after a Rebound

All your effort to grab the rebound and regain possession of the basketball would be in vain if you do not protect the basketball on your way down. Remember, after you grab a rebound, you will usually be surrounded by opponents that are standing by ready and eager to steal the basketball from you. Be alert and vigilante!

As you land after grabbing a rebound, bring the basketball in under your chin (Chinning the basketball) with your elbows out and with a hand on each side of the basketball gripping it tightly. Do not swing your elbows wildly in order to keep your opponent(s) away from you, because doing so might lead to a foul violation.

Pivot away from an opponent that might be trying to steal the basketball away from you. Do not put the basketball on the floor immediately after going up for a rebound, especially if you are surrounded by your opponents.

Keep your head up after grabbing the rebound so that you can easily scan the entire basketball court to see if you can find an open teammate who might be positioned to lead a fast break for an easy score.

There you have it…Becoming an awesome rebounder is as simple as (1) Establishing great inside position; (2) Grabbing the rebound; and, (3) Protecting the basketball after you grab the rebound. With constant practise, there is no reason why you cannot become a top, if not the best, rebounder for your basketball team. In addition to mastering the mechanics of grabbing a rebound as illustrated above, equally as important is developing a mindset or attitude that you will attempt to grab every rebound during a basketball game. Remember, it is not the “size” of the rebounder that matters; rather, it is his burning desire to go after every rebound.

My Basketball Game Sky-rocketed Above the Rim Once I Discovered the Science of Specificity Training–find Out Why

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Are you getting pushed around on the basketball court? Do you feel out of breath practically minutes after joining a basketball game? Do you feel like you have the vertical leap of a worm? Or, do you find yourself getting left in the dust every time you try to keep up with the man that you’re guarding because you have the speed of turtle? If you answered “yes” to any of the preceding questions, there is no doubt that you need to develop either more strength, basketball stamina, better leaping ability, or speed. The good news is that there is a way to improve that specific “weak” area of your game, regardless of which one it might be. The solution: Specificity Training.

What is specificity training? Basically, it’s a way to target-train certain muscle groups in your body in a specific way regularly, consistently, and frequently in order for those muscle groups to perform and react the way you want them to under pre-determined situations or duress. For example, since basketball is such a fast-paced sport, your body should be able to keep up with a sudden change of direction while in motion or in a situation where you suddenly had to dive on the basketball court to get a loose ball.

With the help of a qualified trainer, you could design different types of training regimens that would condition the different muscles in your body that are often activated or triggered and needed when you’re playing a game of basketball; the type of exercises incorporated into a workout regimen to achieve specificity training varies depending on the type of sport. For example, the way you would train to get ready for basketball season would be different from how you would prepare for football season.

And, depending on your personal goals, there are various types of specificity training programs that can be designed to meet your sport-specific needs such as, core training, speed training, vertical-jump training, strength training, endurance training, and flexibility training. For the purposes of this article, we will only discuss core training.

Core training: An important component to any specificity-training exercise program.

If you don’t do anything else, you should at minimum include core training as part of your overall basketball training regimen. Core training involves developing the core muscles in your body. Just like the foundation of a house supports the entire structure and prevents it from collapsing over time, the core muscles of your body serve as the foundation of your body; they support your entire body by providing stability whenever you’re performing any physical activity from something as simple as walking or bending down to tie your shoe laces to a more physically demanding activity such as leaping up several feet into the air to dunk a basketball.

Regardless of the type of activity you’re trying to perform, it all starts from your core or sometimes referred to as the “center” of your body. If your core muscles groups are not sufficiently developed to especially withstand the rigors of your specific sport (in this case, basketball), you will be more susceptible to muscle injuries with the most common injury being lower back pains. Also, your posture will be negatively affected.

Now that you have discovered that your core muscle groups play a significant role in how well you perform on the basketball court, what are the exact muscles in your body that makeup your core muscle groups? If you have not already guessed it, the muscles that combined makeup your main core muscle groups are your abdominal muscles (Transversus abdominis, Rectus abdominis, and External oblique), your back muscles (Multifidus and Erector spinae), and your hip flexor muscles (Psoas major, Illiacus, Rectus femoris, Pectineus, and Sartorius).

Therefore, you should perform exercises that would target the preceding muscle groups as part of your core training regimen. Some basic exercises that would help strenghten your core muscles include: Squats, abdominal crunches, push-ups, back extensions, russian twists, hip lifts, lunges, and row exercises.

Proper nutrition is also essential to making sure that your core muscle groups are not compromised. This is because, you want to prevent excess fat from accumulating around your midsection, which would not only compromise the performance of your heart but most likely also put a strain on your lower back. Therefore, try not to eat high-calorie-junk fatty foods. Do not drink excessive amount of alcoholic beverages, and try not to eat late at night.

The importance of core training cannot be emphasized enough. Nothing happens unless you have a strong, properly developed core muscles. The longer you wait, the more difficult it would become later to develop your core muscle groups. Start today. Don’t delay. How is basketball today different from basketball from the past?

Friday, August 13th, 2010

THIS IS URGENT, I might come across as irresponsible and such but I have a concise report due tomarrow on basketball and I really don’t know much neither can I find much. SO can someone please tell me how basketball from today differs from basketball from then of the past. And if you can, please mention a player, coach, ref., etc might have made an impact on basketball, and if you do please mention what she/he did.
Please be specific :p haa,

Before was more of a finesse game, now is much more physical and grueling since the goal is to make the more easy close range shots that you can. Now the average height of the players is a minimun of 6′3 in many cases. In the past someone 6′3 was considered a big man of at least a forward. The skill level of players today is off the charts and that’s the reason why I think many players are so underrated because to shine in a league today with so many talent is just too diffucult as well as winning a Championship. Many people don’t realize that. Players that have made a big impact are : Bill Russell, John Havlicek, Jerry West, Earl Jones, George Gervin, Dr. J., Larry Bird, Magic Johnson , Wilt Chamberlain, Kareen Abdul Jabbar, Shaquille Oneill, Michaael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley, Dennis Rodman, Karl Malone, Hakeem Olajuwon, Tim Duncan, and and many more but this guys between an elite group that does noit reach the 100 players in total.

Coaches: I think Red Auerbach is the one who is worth talking more about.

College Basketball and the Professional League

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Since its inception in early the twentieth century, people have enjoyed playing the game of basketball. Indeed, in the United States, professional and college basketball has gained quite a following nationwide. Now, with the immense popularity of the NBA and its superstars, many students are looking to get noticed in tryouts, to play in college teams and even perhaps in the NBA. High school students who are talented in the game have a chance at furthering their education by participating in athletic scholarships, where, in exchange for playing in college teams, they get an academic scholarship and other financial help during their stay in that particular school.

U.S. colleges first began to play the game between 1893 and 1895. The first college games were held in Madison Square Garden in 1934, and afterwards college basketball began to attract heightened interest. By the 1950s basketball had developed into a major college sport, thus paving the way an increased interest in the professional sport.

The National Basketball League was the first professional league in the game. It was formed in 1898 to protect players from exploitation and to promote safety rules for the game. The NBL lasted for only five years, however, and in its wake several loosely-organized leagues formed (and disbanded) throughout the northeastern United States. One of the first and greatest professional teams was the Original Celtics, formed in 1915 in New York City. They participated in as many games as 150 a season, and they were the premier team in basketball until 1936. The Harlem Globetrotters, founded in 1927, is an exhibition team which focuses on stylized tricks in ball handling.

In 1949, two professional leagues, the National Basketball League (formed in 1937) and the Basketball Association of America (formed in 1946) merged to create the National Basketball Association (NBA). The NBA is now regarded as the premier basketball league in the United States, and is likewise well-known throughout the world.

The Internet has proven to be a useful venue for both students interested in college basketball, as well as coaches involved in the process of recruiting for athletic scholarships. There are many websites and online forums wherein students and scouts can come together and interact. D1Athletes is an online community wherein high school athletes and coaches alike can share and exchange information they need in their search for athletic scholarships.

Basketball Hoop Nets: What Kinds Are Available?

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

When you are looking for basketball hoops and goals, you also need to consider the type of net you will use. For many units, the net comes as part of the package but you can buy this item separately as well. To make a good choice when it comes to basketball nets, you need to educate yourself about the different types that are available.

Not all basketball nets are constructed from nylon. You can also choose a chain net. Since chain will last longer than a nylon net, it is a good long-term investment when you are looking for quality equipment for the gym or playground. When you are looking at updating your existing basketball nets, consider the cost against the number of years of use you will get from them.

You may be able to buy nylon basketball nets for a lower price, but you should also plan on replacing them much more often than if you bought a chain net in the first place. You also need to factor in the time it will take to re-equip your basketball hoops and goals with nylon nets every so often. This type of maintenance should be factored in when you are trying to make the best decision about your basketball equipment needs. Considering your initial investment upfront, and the lasting benefits of your equipment may help you justify a slightly higher expense for a better product.

The FT10 can be used in competition. It is also suitable for home use when you want to upgrade your existing basketball net to something that is of better quality. The FT10 is made from braided nylon and comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Another choice to consider when it comes to basketball nets is the FT10AW. This product is made from a heavier nylon braid than the FT10. The advantage to choosing it over the F10 is the fact that it reduces the whip that is commonly experienced with lighter-weight nets. Again, this basketball net comes with a one-year warranty.

The FT11E is an economy chain net that will last longer than a nylon one. It can be used with any style of basketball goal and is attached to it with “S” hooks. This zinc-plated net comes with a one-year limited warranty.

For consumers who are prepared to invest in a higher-quality chain basketball net, consider the F11. Welded hoops mean that there is no risk of injury to the players. The chain net can be attached to any style of basketball goal, and heavy duty “S” hooks are used for this purpose. It is zinc plated, and comes with a one-year warranty.

Before you decide to invest in a chain basketball net, it’s a good idea to make sure that the unit you are considering can be used with the style of basketball goal you are working with. That way, you can be sure that you are getting the right product for your needs. As long as the chain net can be used with your existing basketball goal, this is the choice that will be more durable over the long term.
